^The company sadly marches out of the castle in despair, knowing that reinforcements would
^soon arrive. Allanon begins to brief everyone on what to do next.
^ALLANON: "We have reached the end of the road, my friends. The journey to Paranor is at an
^end, and it is time for the company to disband and each of us to go his own way. We have lost
^our chance to gain possession of the Sword- at least for the moment. Shea is still missing and we
^cannot tell how long it may take to find him. But the greatest threat facing us is an invasion from
^the north. We must protect ourselves and the peoples of the lands south, east, and west of us
^from that. We have seen no sign of the Elven armies of Eventine, though they were supposed to
^be patrolling this region. It appears they have been withdrawn, and this would only be done if the
^Warlock Lord had begun to move his armies southward."
^BALINOR: "Then the invasion has begun?"
^ALLANON: "Yes. Without the Sword we cannot defeat the Warlock Lord, so we must
^attempt to stop his armies. To do this, we must unite the free nations quickly. We may already
^be too late. Brona will use his armies to seize all of the central Southland. To do this he need
^only destroy the Border Legion of Callahorn. Balinor, the Border Legion must hold the cities of
^Callahorn to give the nations enough time to unite their armies and strike back at the invader.
^Durin and Dayel can accompany you to Tyrsis and from there travel westward to their own land.
^Eventine must bring his Elven armies across the Plains of Streleheim to reinforce Tyrsis. If we
^lose there, the Warlock Lord will have succeding in driving a wedge between the armies, and
^there will be little chance of uniting them.

^BALINOR: "What support can the Dwarfs give us?"
^HENDEL: "The city of Varfleet is the key to the eastern sector of Callahorn. My people must
^protect against any assualt through the Anar, but we can spare enough men to help defend
^Varfleet as well. But you must hold the cities of Kern and Tyrsis yourself."
^DURIN: "The Elven armies will help you on the west!"
^MENION: "Wait a minute! What about Shea? You haven't forgotten about him, have you?"
^ALLANON: "We are not abandoning the search the search for Shea and the missing Sword.
^Flick and Menion will stay with me. I suspect that where we find one, we shall find the other.
^Remember the words spoken to me by the Shade of Bremen. Shea shall be the first to lay hands
^on the Sword of Shannara. Perhaps he has already done so. We will search the Streleheim
^Plains to the West, while Balinor, Hendel, Durin and Dayle go to Tyrsis. Good luck.

^The three men find tracks in the woods, and led by Menion, Allanon and Flick reach a
^promontory overlooking the Streleheim plains. They see an awesome and terrifying site. As far
^as the eye can see, steching miles in every direction, the fires of the Northland army burns away
^in the night. For moments nobody says anything as they stare at the thousands upon thousands
^of gnarled Gnomes and thick-limbed Trolls. It seems like the entire Gnome and Troll nation is
^camped below. How could the Border Legion even hope to stand up to such a mighty force?
^MENION: "I'll go to Callahorn and warn Balinor."
^ALLANON: "Do as you wish when you have found the others. However, any attmept to return
^through enemy lines would be foolhardy at best. Flick and I shall try to find out what has
^happened to Shea and the Sword. We will not desert him, highlander, I promise you. Keep
^close to these smaller mountains until you get past the enemy picket lines. When you reach the
^Mermidon River above Kern, cross there and enter the city. Evacuate the people to Tyrsis
^before the invaders cut off their reatreat. Tyrsis is buildt on a plateau against the back of a
^mountain. Properly defended, it can withstand any assault for at least several days. That should
^be time enough for the armies of the East and West to mobilize. Perhaps Callahorn can be held
^long enough to mobilize and combine the armies of the three lands to strike back at the Warlock
^Lord. It is the only chance we have without the Sword of Shannara!"

^Balinor, Hendel, Durin and Dayle make their way southward to Tyrsis, home of the fabled
^Border Legion. History has yet to give this awesome fighting machine a match it couldn't handle.
^But this time the stakes where higher and the enemy was greater than any every seen in the Four
^Lands... Balinor's thoughts came to the situation of his court before he left. He was a prince of a
^mighty kingdom and the eldest son of the King. He had left his lands several months ago by his
^own choosing, to travel with the mysterious Allanon. His father had asked him not to go, even
^pleaded with him, but Balinor would not reconsider. Unconsciouly, Balinor raised one gloved
^hand to his face, the cold chain mail tracing the line of the scar that ran down the exposed right
^cheek to his chin.
^HENDEL: "Thinking about your brother again?"
^BALINOR: "Yes."
^HENDEL: "You've got to stop thinking about that whole business. He could be a threat to you if
^you persist in thinking of him as a brother and not as a person."
^BALINOR: "It is not so easy to forget such strong ties."
^*Durin and Dayle exchange looks of confusion.*
^BALINOR: " My younger brother Palance and I are the only sons of Ruhl Buckhannah, the
^King of Callahorn. We were very close while growing up- but as we got older, we developed
^different ideas about life. I was the elder, the next in line to the throne. Palance always realized
^this, of course, and it divided us as we grew older..."

^this point... But Hendel wants me to tell you more. He believes that my brother is no longer his
^own master- that he says these things without meaning them. He keeps counsel with a mystic
^known as Stenmin, a man Allanon feels is without honor and will guide Palance to his own
^destruction. Stenmin has told my father and the people that my brother should rule and not I. He
^has turned Palance against me. He has spread lies about Allanon. When I left, even Palance
^seemed to believe that I was not fit to rule Callahorn."
^DURIN: "And that scar...?"
^BALINOR: "An argument we had before I left. That was my main reason for leaving town, to
^give Palance a chance to recover his senses. Anyways he is still my brother, I love him, and I
^cannot give up on him."
^HENDEL: "And that is why he is so dangerous, because he does not feel the same way about
^you. I wish you the best of luck at Tyrsis."
^BALINOR: "You aren't comming with us?"
^HENDEL: "Time is of the essence, and I must travel to Varfleet first, and from then to Culhaven
^to rally support."

^It is now time for Flick to shine. He is wandering aimlessly around when a Troll yells at him,
^gives him a package and shoves him into a tent. Inside there are Skull Bearers and a tied up Elf.
^Flick figures that this Elf is the King, Eventine Elessidel. No wonder the Elves haven't been able
^to help! Without their beloved King they are afraid to make any military moves. When Flick gets
^close enough to Eventine he whispers "Allanon". Evenine looks at Flick and nods. Flick leaves
^the tent and returns to the area a half an hour later. He takes his knife and slowly cuts open the
^tent where Eventine is. By some miracle the Skull Bearers weren't inside the tent, so he goes in
^and frees Eventine without the front guards noticing. They exit throught the sliced tent and a
^Gnome warrior notices them. He begins to question them and recognizes Eventine as an Elf. The
^Gnome lets up a cry of alarm. Eventine grabs a discarded sword a quickly destroys the Gnome.
^Everywhere, sleeping men are awakening and they grab their weapons in search of the intruders.
^But Eventine leads Flick out West with the cover of night aiding them. There are Elven riders out
^there to escort the King back to the Elven homeland.
^EVENTINE: "Thank-you young sir, I am greatly in your debt. My army was patrolling the
^Streleheim plains when a band of Gnomes made a mad dash in an attempt to reach the
^Northland. It would have been an easy victoy for us. The army was divided in half and my side
^was on towards the East. Out of nowhere the main army of Brona came rushing out of the
^Janisson Pass and we were quickly overrun. This had bought the Warlock Lord valuable time
^and the Elves will act quickly. We will aide Tyrsis as soon as possible!"

^Tyrsis is the crossroads of the Four Lands, and through its walls and lands passes members of
^all the nations, giving its people an opportunity to see and understand the differences in face and
^body that distinguished races outwardly were negligible. A Rock Troll would not be stared at
^and shunned because of his grotesque appearance by the people of Callahor; Trolls, Gnomes,
^Dwarves and Elves were common in this land. Balinor was proud that his people were among
^the first to turn from the old prejudices...
^Balinor, Durin and Dayle enter the city. They walk towards the palace and see a soldier walk
^by. Durin notices Balinor's concern.
^DURIN: "What is it, Balinor?"
^BALINOR: "I'm not certain. Look at the insignia of those guards at the gate. None of them bear
^the crest of the leopard- the standard of my Border Legion. Instead they wear the sign of a
^falcon, a mark I do not recognize. The people too- did you notice their look? And the barracks
^were awefully quite... No matter, we will get to the bottom of this at the palace."
^They reach the barracks and it is deserted. One man is scrambling forth bearing the insignia of
^the leopard. He recognizes Balinor immediately.
^CAPTAIN: "My Lord Balinor, you've come at last!"
^BALINOR: "Captain Sheelon, it's good to see you. What is going on?"
^CAPTAIN: "My Lord, the Border Legion has been ordered to disband! By your brother's
^orders! The Lords Acton and Messaline went to the palace to beg the king to reconsider, but
^they did not return."

^BALINOR: "What of my father, the King? Does he not still rule this land and command the
^Border Legion?! What does he say of this fool's play?!"
^CAPTAIN : "I- I don't know, my Lord. We heard the King was ill, and then there was nothing
^more. Your brother declared himself temporary ruler in the King's absence from the throne. That
^was three weeks ago."
^Balinor resumes his march towards the palace despite Sheelon's protests and warnings of
^danger. Dayle suggest that the King could be dead, and with Palance under the influence of
^Stemnin, Balinor could be in great danger. Balinor gives order to the Captain to reassemble the
^Legion, send messangers to the East and Westlands, and go to the palace if Balinor is not back
^in four hours. On the way to the palace, people recognize Balinor and crowds begin to form
^around him. The prince addresses them:
^BALINOR: "My friends- my countrymen. I have missed this land and its brave citizens, but I
^have returned. Have no frear. If there is trouble within the monarchy, then it is for me to face it.
^Please go back to your homes as I go to mine."
^The crowds depart and Balinor takes the Elven brothers to the palace. They discover several
^well armed guards bearing the isignia of the Falcon. Durin knew instantly that they were walking
^into a trap...

^They enter the throne room and see Palance accompained by Stenmin and a dozen guards.
^BALINOR: "Where is my father...?"
^Balinor's query is cut short by a sudden swishing sound as hidden cords release a large leather
^and rope net that had hung unnoticed above the indruders, dropping instantly over all three. The
^guards rush to the scene and subdue the captives.
^PALANCE: "You were a fool to come back, Balinor. You knew what would happen to you if I
^found you again. You are thrice over a traitor and a coward for what you have done- to the
^people, to my father, and now even to me. What have you done with Shirl? What have you
^done with her? You will die for this, Balinor, I sear it! Take them below!"
^Balinor and the Elves are dragged off to the deepest dungeons of the castle, ones that Balinor
^never thought existed. It is doubtfull that anyone else knows of their existance, and that they will
^ever be found...

^Menion has finally reached the Mermidon river, avoiding countless amounts of sentries. His
^common sense tells him that the only hope is to stall the advancing enemy long enough to unite
^the Elven and Dwarf armies with the Border Legion and then strike back. He felt certain the
^missing Sword is lost to them.
^But Menion sees 4 large Trolls in full armor talking to a southland man. He catches a glimpse
^of the man's face, a face he will never forget. The man gives the Trolls a sack that contains a
^small human inside. The Southlander gets on his boat and leaves. Menion decides to take out the
^Trolls and rescue the person inside the bag, for it could very well be Shea. Menion ambushes the
^Trolls and after a tough struggle and many injuries, Menion completes his tak. He opens up the
^sack hoping to find Shea and to his astonishment, it was a woman! Why would the Northlanders
^kidnap a woman?
^GIRL: "It's alright now, I'm all right."
^MENION: "Run for the river- we have to reach Kern."

^Shirl and Menion arrive in Tyrsis and walk to the palace, where they are greeted warmly by
^Palance.
^PALANCE: "Shirl I thought I would never see you again! I.... thought I really lost you. Prince of
^Leah, you are indeed welcome in my kingdom. You have done me a very great service.
^Anything I have is yours- anything. We shall be friends, Great friends! It has been... so long
^since... "
^MENION: "There is trouble, and I wish our circumstances could be better. There is an
^invasion... is something wrong my Lord?"
^PALANCE: "You can help me and this kingdom. My brother seeks to be King in my place. He
^would have me killed but my great advisor Stenmin has saved me from this. But there are
^enemies all around, and we must stand alone against them. Earier they tried to overthrow me,
^but they failed and now are locked away in a deep dungeon. He wants to arise his Border
^Legion as his personal weapon to overthrow me, and I will not let that happen. Come Menion
^Leah, let me show you to your room."
^Palance shows Menion his room, where he goes to sleep. He wakes up just in time as a
^red-cloaked figure rushes at him with a knife. He recognizes the face of the man who gave Shirl
^to the trolls and knows instinctively it is Stenmin. Menion quickly grabs his sword and points it at
^the assain's throat.
^MENION: "Take me to Balinor, now!"

^Menion told Stenmin not to try anything, or else he would "return" the dagger. He also said that
^he was sent there by Allanon, at which Stenmin grew suddenly pale. Stenmin takes Menion past
^the guards and eventually into the forbidden chambers. The prisoners are let out of their cells
^with a couple of guards standing by, and Stenmin acts. He catches Menion off guard a wrestles
^free the dagger, then calls out to the guards that it is a trick. Menion knocks Stenmin into the
^hard ground, and the prisoners grab some discarded weapons and quickly subdue the guards.
^BALINOR: "The Border Legion must be re-formed and sent to hold the Mermidon
^immediately. We must get word to the lower city. I have recieved the sad news that my father is
^dead, and we must find my brother!"
^Menion turns his wrath towards Stenmin.
^MENION: "You were the man on the beach- the kidnapper! You tried to kill me because you
^thought I would recognize you as the man who kidnapped Shirl- the man who turned her over to
^the Northlanders. You traitor! You intended to betray us all- to turn the city over to the Warlock
^Lord without a fight!"
^Just then, Palance walks in.

^MENION: "You have been betrayed by this man, Palance. He has poisoned your heart and
^your mind. He has sapped you of your will to think for yourself. He cares nothing for you; he
^cares nothing for this land, which he has so cheaply sold to the enemy that has already destroyed
^Kern. You once said we would be friends, and friends must have trust for each other. Do not be
^deceived now, or your kingdom will surely be lost."
^STENMIN: "Are you mad? Are you as insane as some say, my King? Will you throw
^everythign away now- give it all back to your brother? Was he meant to be king- or you? This is
^all a lie! The Prince of Leah is a friend to Allanon. Yes, Allanon! Who do you think seized your
^bethroded from her home in Kern? This man who speaks of friendship was part of the
^kidnapping- it was all a ruse to get inside the palace and then assassinate you. You were to be
^killed!"
^PALANCE: "What do you think, borther? Am I really... mad? If not me, then... why, it must be
^everyone else, and I alone am... sane. Say something, Balinor. We should have that talk now.
^Before... I did not want you to say something..."

^Nothing is clear anymore... I don't even feel angry at you Balinor, anymore. Before I wanted to

^MENION: "Palance, listen to me. Call Shirl down from her room. Call her down and she will
^help you."
^PALANCE: "Shirl"
^At that moment, Stenmin went beserk. He wrestled free from Menion's grip and threw himself at
^Palance. He drew forth yet another dragger from beneath his robes and drove it into the younger
^Buckhannah.
^STENMIN: "I give you back your brother, fool!"
^Stenmin takes off and the others give chase. Durin and Dayle close in when Stenmin runs into a
